Preparation

  • Shake the container of Phenol Red Agar well.
  • Suspend 30 g of the powder in 1 L of purified water.
  • Add carbohydrate, 5 – 10 g per L if desired. Mix well.
  • If addition of carbohydrate causes a fall in pH, readjust.
  • Autoclave at 121°C for 15 minutes.

Note: Alternatively, sterile carbohydrate solution may be added to cooled autoclaved solution.

STORAGE

The medium powder should be kept tightly closed and stored at temperatures below 30 degrees Celsius, and the medium should be stored at a temperature of 2-8 degrees Celsius. The best time to use is before the expiration date printed on the product label.

  • Prepared Appearance: Medium, orange-red to rose-red, clear to slightly hazy.
  • with fresh cultures and incubate at 35 ± 2°C for 42 – 48 hours.
