Crystal violet

General description: Crystal Violet is a blue dye, extracted from plants of the genus Gentiana. It is a dye that is a mixture of violet rosanilinis with antibacterial, antifungal, and anthelmintic properties.

Application: Crystal violet is a triarylmethane dye used as a histological stain and in Gram’s method of classifying bacteria. The medical use of the dye has been largely superseded by more modern drugs, although it is still listed by the World Health Organization.
