Borax

General description: Borax is an important boron compound, a mineral, and a salt of boric acid. The term borax is used for a number of closely related minerals or chemical compounds which vary in their crystal water content, but usually “borax” refers to the decahydrate. Application: It is mostly used as a cleaning aid especially for laundry (softening the water). As a cleaning aid, borax is also used as dishwasher detergent, as floor and wall cleaner. It is also used to make buffer solutions in biochemistry, as a fire retardant, as an anti-fungal compound for fiberglass, as a flux in metallurgy, neutron-capture shields for radioactive sources, texturing agent in cooking, and as a precursor for other boron compounds.
